Abstract
Religious education at school has provoked vivid debates in Spain in recent times, on the occasion of the preparation and parliamentary discussion of the Education Organic Law and its regulation on curricular design and development. In this paper the approaches to this issue adopted by the Ministry of Education and Science are presented and examined. It begins by analyzing the three basic principles on which the ministerial position is based: respect to the freedom of education, commitment to the cooperation agreements signed with several religious faiths and respect to individual rights without obligations for others. Finally, the most outstanding decisions on religious education in different educational levels are explained and justified.
