Abstract

INTRODUCTION. In this paper we present the results of a study about the social nature of architecture, and its educational implications. The goal is to analyse the level of entailment between a place (the Plaza Mayor of Salamanca) and its users, considering this square as a mediator instrument, an educational artefact, in the process of identity building, by means of the level of interdependence that the square has with the citizens. METHOD. After presenting the theoretical framework, authors have conducted a descriptive study using the technique of the questionnaire in a survey format, with the probabilistic sampling method, by random routes of sampling. Then a descriptive statistical analysis and inferential non-parametric analysis was carried out. RESULTS. The study shows a medium-high interdependence and entailment level in the users of the Plaza Mayor in Salamanca, from the identification of identity and meaningful, emotional, relational and communication elements. Also, significant differences were found in the consideration of the Plaza as a mediating element according to age. DISCUSSION. We cannot keep thinking that architectural spaces shape the identity of persons without studying the ways in which these spaces display an educational language that generally is hidden and invisible. An educational debate that involves ideology and values that, on many occasions, is silent within the walls that surround us.
