Abstract

The article springs up from numerous data on women´s physical education (PE) during Franco ´s dictatorship. It reveals, among other aspects, discrimination of those who imparted it, and objective ignorance of the matter. All these aspects demanded a deep study that would contribute to the history of education during this period that has marked to some Spaniards´ generations. The main objective is to recover the history of the feminine physical education (FPE) in Spain during the “franquista” period (1939-1975), and to know the organism of who depended it, the Feminine Section (FS), in an attempt to know the past, understand the present, and project a responsible future in the environment of the PE in schools. The used methodology has been the historical-descriptive, accompanied of unstructured interviews. The obtained results allow us extract some conclusions. Some of them are the clarification that FS was an activity dependent on the Movement General Secretary (the only political party in Spain during the “franquista” dictatorship). This institution exerted a decisive influence on the evolution and development of Spanish women´s education, in general, and on their physical education.
