Abstract
The aim of this paper is to describe the process of construction and validation of an instrument measuring the socioeconomic and sociocultural status (SES) of elementary and secondary education students. To do this, at a first stage a semi-structured questionnaire has been applied to university students. This questionnaire is as comprehensive as possible and focuses on several indicators of family SES. Once the items and results have been analyzed, a structured questionnaire is designed and these students apply it to their siblings within the age group considered. The basic idea is that the semi-structured questionnaire operates as an in-depth interview that allows precise and detailed information about the family unit SES so that the information gathered from it can be used as a validity criterion. In the third and final stage, the validity and the items of the instrument are analyzed and the final version of the questionnaire is drawn up.
