Abstract

Teachers of the subject area of Religion are considered by many teachers, and by part of society, as special teachers and somewhat marginal, not only because of the way they access to teaching within public schools, but also because of the nature of the subject matter and the origin of their entering the teaching profession. However, ever since the signing of the «Acuerdos Iglesia-Estado» (Church-State Agreements), in 1979, activities of teachers of religion have consolidated to the point that now, thanks to the LOE, they have their own professional status. This article offers information about the professional and administrative status that has been acquired by these teachers, their numbers and their distribution through the hierarchy of the educational system. Moreover, it provides information on the teachers’ specific roles as educators, their idiosyncrasies and preparation they receive as professionals, as well as requisites for accessing their positions.
