Psychometric evidence and network analysis of the emotional intelligence scale in students of denominational institutions
Main Article Content
Abstract
INTRODUCTION. Emotional intelligence is a construct that is studied from three approaches, skill-based, trait-based, and mixed, which has allowed the development of various instruments that have emphasized the adaptation to different contexts. The present study aims to demonstrate the psychometric properties and analyze the emotional intelligence scale network among adolescent students from religious institutions. METHOD. The method is instrumental with a cross-sectional sample of 550 students surveyed. The data collected had a reliability analysis equal to ω = 0.933, which allowed the application of an analysis of the internal structure based on exploratory factor analysis (AFE; n = 280) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA; n = 270); after knowing the factor structure of the scale, a network analysis was applied with the purpose of showing the nodes and edges that reflect the connections between the variables, and the centrality index per variable. RESULTS. The results show that the original structure was significantly reduced to a more robust factor structure based on 22 items with factor loadings greater than 0.5, whose structure is corroborated by the AFC analysis based on four factors of the emotional intelligence scale with significant goodness-of-fit index (X2 < 3; p-value < 0.001; TLI = 0.939; CFI = 0.947; RMSEA = 0.055); furthermore, the network analysis of the emotional intelligence scale found representative nodes and edges. DISCUSSION. Finally, the value of the scale with a structure based on 22 items measures adequately emotional intelligence and can be used in students.
