Abstract
INTRODUCTION. Service-learning is a training experience in critical and committed citizenship based on networking between different educational and social agents. It provides opportunities for living significant learning experiences of participation, sense of community experiences, and mobilization for defending civic rights. METHOD. Qualitative research is presented aimed at analyzing mechanisms that are deployed in service-learning projects developed by teenagers in their local environment. The co-design methodology was followed through five discussion groups with teenagers participating in service-learning projects, belonging to four secondary schools, and eleven interviews with reference adults. RESULTS. The mechanisms that are generated when teenagers carry out service-learning projects in the local environment were detected, which increase their participation, acquisition of values and civic training. Functions performed by digital technologies as support tools for project development were also explored. DISCUSSION. Citizen participation and training is one of the core values of service-learning methodology, along with awareness, altruism, empathy, and cooperation. Through service-learning actions, teenagers build their autonomy, proactivity, and responsibility, creating links with their community, as well as a sense of belonging and inclusion. In these projects, digital technologies have an instrumental role for citizen participation and training — with their capacity for dissemination, teamwork, and the generation of networks —, although they must overcome the risk of passive activism. Service-learning projects are a quality training opportunity that should be offered to contribute to training of critical, active, and committed citizens.
