El ocio juvenil en las imágenes de la prensa: entre la estereotipia y la ambigüedad

El ocio de los jóvenes se ha considerado fundamental en el desarrollo de la identidad y del self. A estos procesos acompañan las valoraciones sociales de las actividades de ocio juvenil; en particular, las imágenes de la prensa escrita. La presencia y reiteración de imágenes en los medios, conlleva a la aceptación, por parte de la opinión pública, de una interpretación —parcial, sesgada— de la realidad. Con base en estas ideas, en esta contribución se analizan las imágenes del ocio juvenil en la prensa; específicamente, identificando las personas representadas según género y edad, y describiendo las actividades promovidas y los espacios representados —de manera de valorar los estereotipos presentes en la agenda relativa al ocio juvenil. Se obtuvo una muestra de 211 noticias mediante la combinación de las palabras “ocio” y “jóvenes” en los diarios El País (n = 100), La Vanguardia (n = 60) y El Punt Avui (n = 51) publicados a los largo de 2012. Se describen las principales tendencias (frecuencias, porcentajes) de cada variable y se llevan a cabo asociaciones entre las variables con los diarios considerados (mediante la prueba no paramétrica de chi cuadrado), así como entre actividades y el resto de variables relativas a personas, espacios y horarios. Los resultados obtenidos ofrecen una visión del ocio juvenil que, en líneas generales, es masculina, se extiende hasta la adultez y destaca lo festivo —las celebraciones—, transcurriendo en la calle durante las horas del día. A esta visión acompaña la ambigüedad que se desprende de imágenes en las que no hay personas y/o resulta difícil identificar qué se hace, cuándo y dónde. Esta visión es sensible, por una parte, al propio medio que difunde las imágenes y, por otra parte, a estereotipos sobre las propias actividades promovidas como ocios. En un sentido más general, los hallazgos advierten cómo se está influyendo sobre la opinión que tiene el ciudadano sobre el ocio de los jóvenes, cuestión que debería ser abordada frontalmente mediante medidas legislativas, políticas sociales o culturales.Downloads
