Abstract

INTRODUCTION. This paper considers the difficulties that have derived from traditional mathematics and the alternatives that have been developed, as well as the origin of ABN (the Open Number Method). METHOD. The research was undertaken from a mathematical realist approach, principally using a qualitative methodology. RESULTS. The results obtained have confirmed that students using the ABN method achieve better performances in mental arithmetic, operations and problem-solving than those using a traditional method. DISCUSSION. The limitations in the contents of the evaluation, the time taken by the different students to complete it, as well as the varied social backgrounds of the students suggest that the differences in mathematical competence shown between groups could be greater.
