Abstract

Free time as a space for leisure has been taking on great importance in recent decades, especially in the advanced nations, because of the direct influence it has on inhabitants’ well-being and personal and social growth, notwithstanding the economic repercussions of free time. The educational potential in free time can be unlocked if people can be convinced to spend their available time pursuing complete personal fulfilment. Education for leisure is, by its natural characteristics, a professional field that properly belongs to social education, streamlined into permanent education. Children and young adults who are changing their leisure habits have always been the main stakeholders involved. Therefore school is a scene of particular interest, where leisure is an essential factor in comprehensive education. Action in social education, the profile and functions of social educators in the school are two factors that have a direct effect on the improvement of leisure and free time in schools.
