Abstract

The insistent social, academic and political scrutiny on the television has generated a discourse filled of mistrust and dread that usually leads to blame broadcasters and to disqualify television contents. Such a discourse is reasonable enough, but it tends to omit any reflection about the role that corresponds to the audience, by forgetting that television watching is a social practice by means of which someone decides, with a wide margin of autonomy, the establishment of a certain relationship with the television chain and the discourse it promotes. Thus, another equally problematic front in the television debate is opened: that of the forms of appropriation or relationship of the audience with the medium, since its influence is not apart from the way in which users decide, every day, to watch television. The text raises a critical review of studies that specifically approach strategies of television ownership of familiar settings.
