Introduction: Motivation is a psychological factor that determines adherence to physical exercise, so its analysis within different types of group exercise (AADD) can provide useful tools to sports centres in order to offer a better experience to practitioners.
Objective: Therefore, the objective of the study was to analyse the motives for practice among practitioners of AADD, observing differences in motivation with respect to gender, age and type of AADD.
Methodology: A sample of 291 practitioners of group exercise was used (227 women and 64 men), ranging in age from 17 to 82 years, with a mean age of 42.79 ± 16.02 years. The analysed variables were reasons for practice (using the MPAM-R questionnaire).
Results: After analysis, the results revealed significant differences in reasons for practice based on gender, age and type of AADD. Appearance (AP) was a more important reason for those who practiced AADD of the strength (FZ), cardiorespiratory (CR) and multiactivity (MA) type, in addition to men and young people.
Discussion: Therefore, a training approach based on the motives why practitioners choose a particular type of AADD should be sought.
Conclusions: Practice motives, particularly CP and AP, are more relevant for men and younger individuals, and future studies should address these variables in homogeneous settings and use a longitudinal design to establish causal relationships.
