Physical self-concept and body satisfaction of adolescents in relation to school Physical Education: a systematic review

Objective: the main objective of this research was to determine, by means of a systematic review, which are the factors related to physical self-concept and body satisfaction of adolescents in relation to school Physical Education, so that teachers can intervene in promoting the creation of a positive physical self-concept. Methodology: A systematic review was carried out following PRISMA guidelines, by combining the terms "Physical education", "Self-concept", "Body image" and "Factors" in three databases (WOS, SCOPUS and ERIC). Results: a total of 8 articles were included which, according to the subject matter, the variables analyzed in the different investigations, and their results, were divided into the four factors detected: satisfaction of basic psychological needs, promotion of emotional security, promotion of out-of-school physical exercise and avoidance of comparison of appearances. Conclusions: The four factors detected can serve as a tool for the Physical Education teacher who, through the knowledge of these elements, can prepare his programming in order to promote the satisfaction of basic needs, the motivation towards extracurricular physical exercise, the work of emotional security and the avoidance of comparisons of appearances.
