Abstract
In this article we analysed the reflections of the erudite Mexican José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi had about his time school teachers is analysed. It is mainly focused on two points: the education and requirements that they must had, and the dignity and importance of their task. In relation to the first topic, there are different aspects, referring to morality, vocation, preparation and knowledge, character and physical were also raised. In relation to the second one, it is highlighted the need of valuing and dignifying such an important profession that contributed to the progress and development of a country which, throughout author’s life, is about to get the independence from Spain or has just obtained it.
