The objective of the study was to verify the degree of difficulty and capacity of discrimination of the criteria used to evaluate the motor skills of TGMD-2. The study included 159 children, of both sexes, aged between 7 and 8 years old, from four public schools in the city of Maringá-PR, Brazil. The instrument analyzed was the Test of Gross Motor Development - 2nd edition. The statistical analyzes were guided by the two-parameter logistic model for dichotomous data. The results point out the low discriminatory power of some criterias to assess the level of children's motor performance in the dimensions of locomotion and object manipulation, making it possible to reduce the number of criteria / motor skills present in each dimension. It was concluded that the initial model with 48 criteria and 12 motor skills did not fit the study sample and the use of Item Response Theory is a complementary tool to identify the degree of difficulty of each item, including a discriminatory capacity for each of the criteria proposed in the evaluation of the TGMD-2 motor skills.
