The quaestio on predestination by Fernán Sánchez Calavera and others: rhetorical analysis of the poetic dispute preserved in the Cancionero de Baena

The theory of the quaestio is a set of precepts developed by the Greco-Roman rhetorical tradition whose aim is to teach the orator the fundamental argumentative schemes that will allow him to successfully resolve any controversy. The judicial origin of this typology makes it an ideal method of analysis for cancionero’s poetry since both the litigation and the poetic dispute are developed through dialectical confrontation. The application of the precepts derived from the notion of quaestio to the dispute over predestination initiated by Fernán Sánchez de Calavera, preserved in the Cancionero de Baena (PN1), will effectively prove the importance of rhetoric for the study and understanding of medieval literary production.
