The objective of this research is to describe the use of new communication technologies in Arab countries, and to explain the main socio-demographic and attitudinal factors that lead to use some media instead of others. Two hypotheses have been tested: 1) that linguistic homogeneity in these countries explain that each media in a country can be consumed in all others in the region, and 2) that age and education are the main explanatory factors for using mass media.Survey data for 13 Arab countries included in the sixth wave of the World Values Survey (2010-14) have been used to test the hypotheses, and for comparison with 59 other countries.
Analysis has shown that the hypotheses could not be rejected, and it has demonstrated the validity of the centre-periphery theory and the social position index.
