Abstract. This paper describes the design and validation of a questionnaire to determine how specialist teachers incorporate key competences in physical education teaching programmes in primary and secondary education. The questionnaire accompanies the diagnostic phase of the research project «Las competencias básicas en una Educación Física de calidad» del plan nacional I+D+I (2008-2011). Its main objective is to ask physical education teachers their opinion on integrating these competences in their unit programmes and to identify the strategies they use to do this. The process of validating the clarity of the statements in the questionnaire and their relevance to the different dimensions studied was completed by a panel of eleven university lecturers who were all experts in competence-based education. After this, a pilot study was conducted to determine the viability of the questionnaire with 21 physical education teachers currently teaching in compulsory education. The results show that the questionnaire can be an excellent instrument for verifying the degree to which key competences are integrated in Spanish physical education teaching programmes
