Social Science Journals in the Research System: Notes on Editorial Policy for Sociology Journals

Abstract

This editorial essay deals with the challenges that social science journals are facing in the current R&D systems, especially the journals published in languages different than English. First, some changes in the R&D systems are analyzed. They are related to the evaluation polices, the digitalization of science, and the globalization of the market for academic publications. Second, the effects of the above trends in social science journals are specified. Third, some strategies oriented to overcome the current challenges are proposed. They encompass the key elements of a journal’s editorial policy: evaluation, orientation of contents, open access, language, funding, organization of work and metrics. The conclusions argue about the importance of defining an editorial policy, and defend the central role of peer review as the key institution for a scientific journal.

Científico titular del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) en el Instituto de Estudios Sociales Avanzados (IESA). Doctor en Ciencias Políticas y Sociología por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Ha estudiado o trabajado en Reino Unido (Southbank University), Australia (Western Sydney University, University of Wollongong) y Estados Unidos (Indiana University, University of New Mexico). Ha sido evaluador y consultor para los ministerios españoles con competencias en ciencia e innovación, varios gobiernos regionales y organizaciones internacionales como APEC y OCDE. En la actualidad es presidente de la Federación Española de Sociología (FES). Sus líneas de investigación se refieren a las condiciones sociales que afectan a los procesos de innovación. Ha realizado estudios sobre formación de investigadores, evaluación de la ciencia, polí- ticas científicas, relaciones universidad-empresa, creación de empresas, divulgación y los efectos de la transferencia de conocimiento en la innovación. Está especialmente interesado en los usos prácticos de la sociología y las ciencias sociales en general. En la actualidad trabaja en proyectos que estudian las estructuras sociales que facilitan la innovación.
