Keywords:

This editorial essay deals with the challenges that social science journals are facing in the current R&D systems, especially the journals published in languages different than English. First, some changes in the R&D systems are analyzed. They are related to the evaluation polices, the digitalization of science, and the globalization of the market for academic publications. Second, the effects of the above trends in social science journals are specified. Third, some strategies oriented to overcome the current challenges are proposed. They encompass the key elements of a journal’s editorial policy: evaluation, orientation of contents, open access, language, funding, organization of work and metrics. The conclusions argue about the importance of defining an editorial policy, and defend the central role of peer review as the key institution for a scientific journal.Downloads
