Abstract

This article provides an account of the role of fathers in domestic chores and in the upbringing, care and attention of their offspring according to the analysis of the children's discourses. In accordance with a structural sample, three focus groups and two interviews were conducted with children between 12 and 14 years of age residing in the Community of Madrid. The most relevant conclusion is that the place one has in the sociolabour structure has a substantial influence on this issue, though this conditioning is mediated by gender: in all cases, even in the most egalitarian families, women assume more responsibilities and tasks. This study, both in terms of the procedure it employs and the insights it provides, constitutes a novel contribution to the theoretical and methodological corpus of studies on childhood and new fatherhood.
