The common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) has several symbolic meanings in European cultural tradition. Perhaps, the most common of these is the one that describes this bird as the harbinger of spring. This article presents a comparative study of the symbolism associated with the cuckoo in classical literature and Castilian letters. This will allow to analyse the allegorical use of this bird in two of the best-known compositions by Alcuin of York (the Versus de cuculo and the Conflictus Veris et Hiemis), in which it occupies a central position. The first translation into Spanish of both poems is also offered.
