This study aimed to describe how Brazilian high-performance sport received funding through a sports policy involving the Armed Forces and which factors made this policy last for more than ten years. To respond to the proposed objective, semi-structured interviews with four program directors were used as research sources. The determining factors for the continuity of the program were identified, evidenced more frequently among the interviewees, being them the benefits of the Programa de Atletas de Alto Rendimento, the legislative adequacy, the established sports social configurations, the results obtained and finally the funds made available. In addition, it was observed that the program can be advantageous for the representation of the Armed Forces and for the representation of Brazil in international military games, being characterized as a viable, lasting and beneficial alternative for countless agents, from athletes to institutions.
