Abstract. The purpose of this article is to analyze, from a legal point of view, the situation of trail running and how it can get a new official recognition. To this end, the following aspects are addressed: a) the supranational, national –Spain- and regional legal system in relation to the concept, process of official recognition and its implications, b) international, national -Spain- and autonomous organizations currently involved in the development of trail running, and c) the comparison with the cases of other sports and their evolution. After analyzing the current situation and its complexity, from a legal point of view, 3 potential scenarios in the recognition of the sport are raised. These scenarios will be resolved in a foreseeable future by the players involved. Thus, evidences show, once again, how sport structures are tailored to the needs of a given time.
