Health behaviors related to high blood pressure in elderly people at a basic health unit in the Guarapuava-PR, Brazil

Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH) is among of the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases, requiring low-cost and effective control measures that adapt to the Brazilian reality, such as Home Blood Pressure Monitoring (HBPM). From this context, this cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 50 patients with a mean age of 66.7 years (±8.2 years). Questionnaires were used with questions about personal data (date of birth, sex and level of education); on adherence to non-pharmacological therapy (practice of physical activity, reduced sodium diet and absence of smoking), and filling out the HBPM table for 5 days. In the statistical analysis, the chi-square test, Fisher's exact test and multiple linear regression were used to examine the levels of SAH with the study variables. The results showed that elderly people classified as illiterate or having incomplete primary education reported difficulty in measuring HBPM. Non-pharmacological therapy explained 10.3% of the variability in SAH measured by patients, with only patients who never used tobacco showing a positive prediction of 15.2 times less chance of changes in SAH. It is concluded that there was low adherence among elderly patients to non-pharmacological therapy, with non-smoking patients with better levels of education having better levels of systemic arterial hypertension, thus non-pharmacological therapy explained 10.3% of the variability of hypertension between patients. elderly.
