Androcentric thinking in journalistic message. The case of the women train drivers

This article analyzes, from a case study, androcentric bias in the Spanish Print Media between 1929 and 2011. Looking for this analysis it has recollected a comprehensive collection of documents (newspapers and illustrated magazines) located in various specialized newspaper archives. Conclusions show the androcentrism is evidenced on verbal expressions by also on visual representations. The most important journalistic message displayed confrontation between ‘femininity’ and ‘feminism’. The principal stereotype that are projected on women train drivers are exotic people, token women in a profession numerically male-dominated. The judgments include a lax respect for the expressions of women, transmitting in diminutives and colloquial expressions.Downloads
