The resurgence of «Public sociology»

This paper makes an analysis of the new «public sociology» emerged in the context of the American Sociological Association 2003 Presidential Campaign. Public sociology is studied from the point of view of the sociology of science. It is understood as an organized movement in the disciplinary field of sociology. It consists on a set of knowledge and ideas, produced in socially situated conditions, which are inten- RES nº 6 (2006) pp. 145-150 ded to occupy an space of attention and influence among networks of intellectual workers. The first point of the paper provides a definition of public sociology taking into account the main notions of this concept in the history of sociology. The second point specifies the main characteristics of current public sociology as a nascent intellectual movement supported by the works of Michael Burawoy. Then, main ideas of public sociology are described and put in the context of its emergence and institutionalization. Last point addresses the main critical reactions from sociologists in diverse settings.Downloads
