The second life of two folios recovered from the Escorial manuscript of Cuero’s History of England

The autograph manuscript of the History of England (c. 1502-1506) by Rodrigo Cuero, preserved in the Royal Library of the Monastery of El Escorial, is an incomplete manuscript, a number of folios having been lost. In this article we report the finding of two of these lost folios, which until now had been considered unidentified fragments. Once the folios are identified as part of Cuero’s manuscript, we analyze the «second life» of these fragments, after they were detached from the complete work and incorporated into a miscellaneous volume. This leads us, on the one hand, to investigate how its use and recontextualization in this volume implies a reinterpretation of the two folios split from the original, and on the other hand, to delineate the historical development of the work as a textual object and of the manuscript as a cultural object.
