Abstract

On the basis of the epidemiology of nosocomial infection, a historical review is made of the policy of control and isolation supported in recent decades by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A detailed exposition is given of both the general measures to be adopted facing any patient (standard precautions), and those specific measures that must be set underway depending on the mechanism of transmission of the disease (area, by drops and contact). A list is provided of the type and duration of the precautions to be adopted according to the aetiology of the infection.
