About the journal

History of the journal

This Spanish journal was created in 1997 by Regional Order 5/1997 of January 14 by the Health Minister, by which it is established the issuing of the scientific publications “Anales del Sistema Sanitario de Navarra”.

Its title links with “ANALES del Instituto Médico de la Beneficencia” and “ANALES del Instituto Médico de Navarra”, journals published between 1959 and 1984 to gather part of Navarre´s medical activity.

Although the initial goal was ANALES del Sistema Sanitario de Navarra to be a publication from Navarre´s health community to Navarre´s health community, over time it has welcomed authors from other autonomous communities and countries, who have helped shape the journal to what it is today.

2022 marks the 25th anniversary of the journal.

Focus and scope

Anales del Sistema Sanitario de Navarra (electronic ISSN: 2340-3527, hard copy ISSN: 1137-6627) is a diamond open access, double-blinded peer-reviewed scientific journal, which abbreviate journal name is An Sist sanit Navar. It considers articles in Spanish and English, mostly research articles, short research articles, systematic reviews, clinical case reports and letters to the Editor, on the field of health/disease, including public health, health management, medical specialties, primary health care and nursing.

Publication frequency

The journal publishes three numbers by year (January-April, May-August, September-December), in open access only- electronic format from April 2022. Articles are definitively published online as a PDF document after their acceptance and copyediting.

Publication fees

Anales del Sistema Sanitario de Navarra does not charge authors fees for submitting their work nor the publication of their articles.

Archiving Policy and preservation

Free access to all the contents of Anales del Sistema Sanitario de Navarra is guaranteed by their electronic deposit in the following repositories: Repositorio Español de Ciencia y Tecnología (RECYT), in PDF and XML formats, in the Scientific Library On Line (SciELO) in PDF, HTML and XML, and in PubMed Central (PMC), in XML and PDF formats from 2022. Until 2022, one copy of each paper volume was deposited in the National Library of Medicine of the National Institutes of Health (NIH, USA).

In addition, Anales del Sistema Sanitario de Navarra is part of the Public Knowledge Project Preservation Network (PKP-PN), which allows the digital preservation of journals hosted in OJS.

The journal uses persistent identifiers for authors (ORCID), organizations (ROR) and articles (DOI).

Property and managemet

The Health Department of the Government of Navarre (España) owns the journal Anales del Sistema Sanitario de Navarra. Its management is performed by staff from Sección de Investigación e Innovación from Servicio de Planificación, Evaluación estratégica e Investigación.

Access, structure and functionalities of the website

Access - The journal "Anales del Sistema Sanitario de Navarra" is hosted and managed by the Spanish Repository of Science and Technology (RECYT), which uses Open Journal Systems (OJS) v.3.3.0.20 software from the Public Knowledge Project (PKP). PKP is committed to ensuring the accessibility of its platforms for all users. In fact, in OJS versions 3.3 and higher, PKP has developed a new default theme that has been audited by the Canadian consulting firm Access Changes Everything Inc. to identify accessibility barriers.

Structure - The OJS structure covers all aspects of articles and issues publishingl, from creation of the journal’s website, the publication workflow of received articles, and their publication, dissemination, and indexing.

It includes a user interface (Front-end):

  • Main page of the repository with journal index that provides access to each journal's website
  • Articles display in PDF and other formats (ePUB, XML, HTML)
  • Advanced search system (by keywords, publication date, article, author, topic, metadata)

Website functionalities

- Editorial management: allows editorial flow management, from submission of articles, peer reviewers assignment and process, editorial decision, communication with other users during production, translating, proofreading and layout.

- Publishing and dissemination: allows assignment of persistent identifiers (DOI) to each article, indexing in academic databases and search engines, and integration with ORCID, CrossRef, and Google Scholar. It allows metadata enrichment and dissemination though social media.

- Accessibility: articles are available in several accessible formats, including downloadable PDF, screen-readable PDF, and XML (previously HTML). The version of OJS used does not guarantee that the site is accessible to people with disabilities, as is the case with later versions.

- Security and administration: control of user roles and permissions, plagiarism protection and data backup and restore.
