Resumen

ABSTRACTO. Este estudio exploró la conciencia sobre la seguridad en el agua, la capacidad de natación y el comportamiento de prevención de ahogamientos entre adolescentes malayos de entre 13 y 17 años. Se realizó un estudio transversal con 525 estudiantes de secundaria (278 niños y 247 niñas) de cinco regiones de Malasia. Los datos se recopilaron a través de una encuesta en línea autoadministrada (cuestionario modificado de seguridad en el agua y prevención de ahogamientos) utilizando Google Form. Ambos géneros demostraron niveles similares de conciencia sobre la identificación de peligros de ahogamiento y las tareas y reglas de seguridad en el agua. La mayoría de los encuestados fueron clasificados como no nadadores. En particular, el 57% de ellos no sabía nadar, mientras que una cuarta parte podía nadar menos de 50 metros. Solo el 17% afirmó tener una capacidad de natación adecuada. Los niños demostraron una habilidad para nadar significativamente mayor (p<0,001) en comparación con las niñas, aunque las niñas reflejaron mejores prácticas de seguridad con un menor riesgo al nadar: solos/sin supervisión (p=0,001), en áreas prohibidas (p<0,001) y en aguas de profundidad desconocida (p=0,03). Estos hallazgos proporcionan conocimientos adicionales para las políticas educativas, con el fin de desarrollar programas impactantes de prevención de ahogamientos a lo largo de la vida en Malasia.
