Este artículo es el resultado de las aportaciones realizadas durante la mesa redonda denominada: “Retos de la escuela del siglo XXI ante la sociedad postmoderna del ocio y el tiempo libre. Educar para la mejora de la calidad de vida”, que fue desarrollada durante el IV Congreso Internacional sobre la Enseñanza de la Educación Física y el Deporte Escolar celebrado en septiembre de 2001 en la Universidad de Cantabria (Santander).
