Introduction: Physical-sporting activity (PSA) progressively decreases throughout the educational stages, affecting development and health.
Objective: To describe the levels of PSA of university students in Catalonia throughout their academic life and to analyze the differences between genders, most practiced PSA, and motivations.
Methodology: We designed a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional study that included a sample of 423 students (72.8% women and 27.2% men) with a mean age of 21.3 years. An anonymous ad hoc questionnaire on PSA was administered.
Results: Gender differences in PSA were revealed throughout all educational stages. Men showed stability in PSA during all stages while women showed an increase in primary school, a decrease in high school, and an increase in university. The main motivations were fun and friendships. The most practiced PSA included football, basketball, swimming, and gymnastics, with fitness activities mostly practiced during university. PSA in high school increases the likelihood of practice during university. However, practice during elementary school does not predict such continuity. Discussion: Gender differences influence the practice of PSA, with a higher dropout rate in females. Adolescence emerges as a critical period of decline.
Conclusions: To counteract the decrease in PSA levels, socio-educational interventions are required to reduce disparities and promote continuity at university. We recommend promoting PSA programs adapted to the needs and preferences of each developmental stage.
