Coubertin in Guatemala: Proposal for Teaching Coubertinian Values in Mayan Communities

Abstract

In the international academic sphere, the dissemination of Pierre de Coubertin's values and legacy represents a significant field of interest, though there is a noticeable lack of projects aimed at promulgating them in indigenous languages. This research focused on developing an educational program to instill Coubertinian values in Maya communities, utilizing an interdisciplinary approach that includes playful, artistic, cultural, and sporting activities, based on the translation and cultural adaptation of the book "The True Pierre de Coubertin" into the K'iche' Maya language. Through a phenomenological qualitative methodology, 250 students from a monolingual school in Totonicapán, Guatemala, were involved. Data collected via focus groups revealed that teaching Coubertinian values, contextualized to the cultural reality of the participants, promotes a deep sense of inclusion, identity, and belonging. The values of friendship, respect, fair play, and universality emerged as fundamental for personal development, peace, and harmonious coexistence. This study highlights the importance of adapting Coubertin's educational principles to specific cultural contexts, emphasizing their potential to inspire social transformation and strengthen cultural identity in indigenous communities.
