Effects of deep squats and half squats on muscular power in track cyclists

Abstract

This study determined the impact of a training program aimed at enhancing power through deep squats and half squats. Nine athletes registered in the Vallecaucana Cycling League participated in the study. Measurements of time over a distance of 60 meters with a stationary bike start, as well as countermovement jump (CMJ) and one-repetition maximum (RM), were taken before and after a 4-week training period. Participants were divided into three groups: group 1 performed half squats, group 2 executed deep squats, and group 3 underwent both exercises. Significant changes were observed in the time values over 60 meters for group 2, showing improvement (from 9.35 s ± 1.18 s to 9.19 s ± 1.19 s), in contrast to the other two groups that did not experience significant improvements. Group 2 also demonstrated improvements in CMJ values (from 37.24 cm ± 6.22 cm to 40.75 cm ± 5.12 cm), as did group 3 (from 33.17 cm ± 3.12 cm to 35.07 cm ± 5.56 cm). Conversely, group 1 did not show improvements in these results. Regarding RM, all groups exceeded their initial marks. In summary, the deep squat exercise proved to be more effective in enhancing performance in all tests, even with a short training period, regardless of the execution angle of the exercise.
