The Design of Urban Public Space for the Promotion of Sports Practice

In the late 20th century, other more informal ways of sports practice emerged from conventional spaces to take public space. It is a paradigm change that places sport within a complex structure of relationships, in which administrations take advantage to promote a more active life amongst citizens, generate social capital, and show a renewed image of the city with international projection. With the aim of delving into the relationship between urbanism and sports practices, this article explores and validates the characteristics for a facilitating and inclusive urban design. Through the analysis of the waterfront of Barcelona, the pertinence of its design for the promotion of a more active life is verified, but it is noted that the practices it receives do not improve the exclusion rates present in conventional sports venues.
