Abstract

The studies of consumption inequalities have been characterized by the use of social class as the main concept to explain them. Only a few studies introduce the concept of gender in the explanation of consumers’ behavior. One of the reasons is that traditionally the family has been considered as a unit of consumption, therefore there are scarce data about individuals. This article suggests a theoretical explanation that contributes to the study of consumption inequalities between genders. It also contributes with some empirical evidence that shows how gender is an issue that explains some of the inequalities in consumption
