Abstract

Wine production cooperatives developed in Catalonia at a time when the social and political conflict of the tenants called rabassaires was at its peak. The successful electoral campaigns of Lluís Companys, the main organizer of the Union of Rabassaires, coincided with the creation of the first cooperative wineries. But wine cooperativism was very impervious to the influence of the rabassaires movement, even though this movement was closely linked to the cooperative phenomenon and the wine cooperatives had the participation of the rabassaires. This article tries to explain this apparent contradiction with the study of a neuralgic area of the rabassaires struggle, where the social and political mobilization of vine growers was most intense at the beginning of the 1920s.
