Abstract

The aim of this article is to explain the challenges faced by the wine cooperative movement in the early 20th century from a case study. Using internal documentation of the cooperative winery, it explains the obstacles faced by these cooperatives in a very critical period for wine markets, how they tried to overcome these problems, and what were their constraints in terms of firms competing in a depressed wine market. The case study has the added interest of being a project carried out by the small peasantry which was able to consolidate and have continuity until almost the present day. It is argued that both the continuity and consolidation of the cooperative, as well as its weaknesses and constraints, can be explained by the characteristics and functioning of this specific type of business organization.
