Abstract

Following on from the picture of the mid-nineteenth century Spanish city given by Quirós Linares
based on texts by Madoz, the author offers a vision of these same at the turn of the twentieth
century with their characteristic and precarious health and social problems in answer to which
public health engineering initiatives were the order of the day. Hitherto unpublished source
documents of Junta Consultiva de Urbanizacion (T&C Planning Consulting Board) along with
seventeen works drawn up for as many cities held by the Archivo General de la Administración have
been consulted here and a study made of fi rst infrastructures, next services and facilities and then
T&C planning works.
