Abstract

The city of Úbeda is here described as being one of the most outstanding examples of Spanish Renaissance
cities and their architecture. Hitherto only its architecture and aristocratically splendid 'Plaza Vázquez de
Molina' district were deemed fit subjects for study while some other aspects of the city were granted scant
attention. For the author important among these should figure the municipal public interventions carried
out during the 16th century and especially that which, by focusing attention on those mediaeval squares linked
to specific trades, endowed the city with a noteworthy municipal and symbolic tone and a pride in itself
as a community quite up to off-setting the omnipresent expression of a very parochial and aristocratic patronage.
