Introduction: Low levels of physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle have become a global health problem. Currently, a large percentage of children and adolescents worldwide are physically inactive. Objective: To determine the levels of health-related physical fitness in Colombian children and adolescents before and after participating in a sports training program. Methods: Quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive study with a sample of 290 children and adolescents aged 5-17 years, 134 males and 156 females belonging to a sports training program. The sample participated in an 8-week sports training program. The Fitnessgram battery was used to assess physical fitness. Results: Improvements were identified in aerobic capacity (p<0.000), maximum oxygen consumption (p<0.006), trunk flexibility and strength (p<0.000), lower and upper body flexibility (p<0.000), upper body strength endurance (p<0.000), and abdominal strength (p<0.000). This change was characterized by an increase in the number of children and adolescents who were in the healthy zone category. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study reveals a significant improvement in physical fitness levels after the 8-week sports training program intervention, characterized by an increase in the proportion of children and adolescents in the healthy zone, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of this type of intervention.
