Family can be considered as a laboratory where many of the social changes that affect the whole society are experienced and take place. But it can also be considered as a basic catalyst of social transformation. These trends can be studied using the different International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) waves and the surveys by the Social Affairs Ministry. The results show the continuity of a peculiar Spanish culture of familialism. They also show how structural changes in the social position of the women are not enough to rapidly make progress in co-responsibility, and how the stagnation of fertility is explained, not just by the lack of supportive family policies, but mostly by the fact that our family culture is not well understood.
