Loneliness in Spain. Profiles of its positive or negative perception

The aim of this study is to examine how loneliness is perceived in the Spanish population. Beyond being framed as a social problem, loneliness can also be understood as something positive, associated with freedom, achievement and personal well-being. Using nationally representative data for Spain, we analyze six dimensions of loneliness (three negative and three positive) capturing these contrasting conceptions. Based on six logistic regression models, the study identifies the most influential factors and the sociodemographic profiles associated with positive and negative dimensions of loneliness. Age and educational attainment emerge as the strongest predictors across models. A negative conception of loneliness is more likely among individuals with low levels of education, childless couples and those who do not report feeling happy. In contrast, a positive perception of loneliness is especially associated with people who live alone and have higher levels of education.
