On October 29, 2024, an exceptionally heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in several districts near Valencia, especially in the densely urbanized area of Horta Sud. In total, according to official figures as of January 18, 2025, the catastrophe has caused 224 deaths and 3 people are missing. The article is a first approach to the tasks that this extraordinary event poses to sociology, pointing out some issues that will hopefully be the subject of in-depth studies in the near future. We point out some possible avenues of research: the natural and the social in extreme weather events, floods in developed societies, different impacts according to economic levels and age, and governance issues in these contexts.
