Cuatro momentos de la doctrina en política exterior estadounidense: ¿entre la teoría y la práctica?

Las doctrinas o estrategias en política internacional constituyen uno de los elementos de mayor interés para la disciplina de las relaciones internacionales como punto de conexión entre la teoría y la práctica. El análisis de cuatro de las grandes doctrinas de la política exterior estadounidense –dos de ellas realistas, como las de Truman o Nixon, y dos idealistas, como las de Clinton o Bush hijo– y su desarrollo histórico llevan a la conclusión de que éstas son capaces de modificar la realidad y crear instrumentos duraderos para aplicar a contextos muy diferentes, llegando incluso a la actualidad –por ejemplo, contención, teoría del dominó o “vietnamización”. Se debe tener en cuenta, sin embargo, la necesidad de que las mismas respondan a criterios de pragmatismo y flexibilidad, prudencia y autorrestricción, así como que acepten los límites institucionales o morales de las sociedades sobre las que se asientan.
