Abstract

This paper studies the Majorcan shipping fleet renovation using privateering to incorporate ships by force for an approximation to the naval technological frontier. Corsair predation provided the ships required for this process. The development of a small merchant and corsair fleet benefited also from the reinvestments of certain seafarers and merchants in shipowning, after observing the business opportunities that the war created.
