Abstract

The campus of the University of Navarra in Pamplona is an exceptional case among
all Spanish universities. Arising as a private initiative in 1952, and thanks to the support of
local institutions, the university developed an American-inspired space model based on scattered buildings and large extensions of open green areas. This unique spatial configuration –as a residential campus or inhabited park– was consolidated due to the implementation of different urban planning instruments, highlighting the great importance of legal aspects, often above those purely referring to design. The present paper analyses the urban evolution of this university in the perspective of recent history of urbanism in Spain starting from the 1956 Land Act, which had a strong administrative focus. It offers a new reading of the spatial uniformity of this campus, as a direct consequence of the successive projects of integral planning as well as of its peculiar urban planning process.
