Abstract

Having considered the city and territorial transformations undergone by the costal poart of the Valencian
Autonomous Region, an examination is then undertaken of the present-day situation of the Alicante-Elche
urban district and the impact upon this of commercial estates —these being seen here as being emblematic
of the new urban landscape. The paper makes a first approach to the phenomenon by studying a series of
variables that could well shed some light upon the siting of such centres along with the way they then affect
both the city and territory to then offer ways by which these activities could then be used as tools for an
explaining the underpinning to territory.
