Portland and its metropolitan area stand out for their pioneering and democratic approach to controlling urban sprawl on a metropolitan scale. The establishment of the Urban Growth Boundary in the late 1970s aimed to restrict the extreme expansion of the city, safeguard agricultural and forested areas in the surrounding valley, and enhance the design and management of urban infrastructures. Over the course of the last 40 years, these objectives have evolved to address the city's demographic growth while ensuring long-term real estate investments. The study examines the current trends in the city, focusing on increasing urban density—a dimension not initially considered in the inception of this initiative. The intention is to contribute to the understanding of ongoing urban dynamics, serving as a benchmark for other cities grappling with similar challenges in continually evolving urban environments.
